Samsung Recognized Among 10 Best Global Brands for the First Time

Samsung ranked 9th on this year's list of Best Global Brands released by Interbrand, the world's largest brand consulting firm, on Tuesday. It is the first time that Samsung has squeezed inside the top 10.

Hyundai Motor climbed eight notches from last year to 53rd, while Kia Motors hit a new high by advancing to among the top 100.

Samsung's brand value was estimated at US$32.9 billion, up 40 percent from last year. The rise is attributed to the firm's dominance of the global market for smartphones and flat-panel TVs.

Hyundai Motor's brand value rose 24.4 percent on-year to $7.5 billion, while Kia Motors ranked 87th with $4.09 billion. Kia showed the fastest growth among Korean companies, while Hyundai has narrowed the gap between consumers' perception of quality and the actual quality of its vehicles, Interbrand said.

Coca Cola ruled the realm with $77.8 billion, followed by Apple, IBM, Google and Microsoft. Interbrand ranks firms based on three key aspects -- the financial performance of the branded products or services, the role of the brand in consumers' decision-making process, and the overall strength of the brand.
