“The
Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s Classic Revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and
Carine Roitfeld,” an exhibition featuring worldwide A-listers wearing
the well-tailored, collarless tweed Chanel jacket, has come to Korea at
Beyond Museum in Cheongdam-dong, southern Seoul.
Some
110 black and white photographs on display are Lagerfeld and Roitfeld’s
ode to the timeless fashion icon. Lagerfeld, creative director for
Chanel, took the photos and Roitfeld, chief of CR Fashion Book and
former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris, styled the celebrities.
First
in Tokyo in April, the exhibition has toured New York, Taipei, Hong
Kong, London, Moscow, Sydney and Paris before heading to Seoul. It is
associated with a book of the same name, published in March.
The
photos show a wide array of stars wearing the basic jacket. Korean
sweetheart Song Hye-kyo, the only Korean in the project, wore the black
jacket with a few cute brooches and sequined shorts. Posing on a pair of
roller skates, she creates a unique look. Song was asked to participate
in the project by Lagerfeld when she visited Paris to attend a Chanel
fashion show in October 2011.
Some wear it
classic as a full Chanel suit, while others gave it a funky twist such
as adding a studded leather vest like Alice Dellal. Model Stella Tennant
draped the jacket over her shoulders and Astrid Berges-Frisbey carried
it by the girdle.
Actress Sarah Jessica Parker
wore the jacket as a headpiece, while model Poppy Delevingne exudes
femininity by wearing the black jacket over a gown with ballet shoes.
Japanese actress Yu Aoi wore a Japanese kimono belt with the black
jacket, creating a mix of Chanel’s classic and Japanese tradition.
A photo of Kirsten Owen grabs attention as she is the only one in a little white jacket.
Roitfeld also stood in front of the camera, wearing the black jacket with layers of pearl necklaces.
The
basic item truly suits everyone — regardless of gender or style — and
even children. It goes with jeans and a fancy tutu skirt, proving why it
is timeless.
The exhibition runs through Dec.
12. Admission is free. The jackets, specially tailored for photo shoots,
will be displayed in Chanel boutiques in Seoul, including at Galleria,
Hyundai Department Store, Shinsegae Department Store and Shilla Duty
Free stores.
